Environmental Protection

Master studies

Program description

Melting glaciers, dying rainforests, microplastics reaching every nook and cranny of the Earth and the organisms living on it.... Surely you've heard about these and other problems our planet is facing. If you feel that you should do something to help it, studying Environmental Conservation might be a good first step! This English-language master's degree program is designed for those interested in contemporary and broad environmental protection. As our graduate, you will gain a solid understanding of current global changes, environmental monitoring, and sustainable management of natural resources. We believe that effective environmental protection also requires good official decision-making, both locally and in key institutions at the state level. That is why you will participate in interdisciplinary program that combines such fields as biology, ecology, biotechnology, law and sociology. To meet these requirements, our teaching staff comes from different universities and departments.

One of the greatest advantages of our study programme is the global approach to all major aspects of environment protection. Our intention was to transfer the knowledge and practical skills which could be used by graduates irrespective of the conditions in countries where they will work. The graduates will be able to evaluate and interpret various ecological processes, especially those that are important for making any decisions about the environment. Moreover, the graduates will be acquainted with the methods of effective team work (for example; how to choose the leader, share responsibilities, how to interpret the results of their analyses and draw conclusions in a team). The programme of the studies offers a number of courses which will teach the students how to find and define research problems, obtain and analyse data collected from different sources, consult with experts, use statistical methods, and interpret as well as present the results of their analyses. Beside obligatory courses, the programme offers a wide variety of facultative courses. It gives students oppurinity to tune the programme according to individual’s interests and needs.

Graduate competencies

You will get to know and learn to use the methods of environmental protection, shaping, and geographical information systems, mathematical modeling of ecological phenomena, analysis and interpretation of phenomena occurring in broad spatial domains (landscape, continents, biomes, etc.), as well as conducting environmental monitoring and preparation of investment impact reports on the environment and the management of natural resources. The acquired knowledge, specialist skills, and competencies will allow the graduate to:

  • preparation of official and planning documents as well as environmental reports and surveys
  • use of strategies, methods, and forms of environmental protection at various spatial scales
  • using experimental, observational, and numerical techniques as well as methods of building mathematical models used in research on the functioning of populations, ecosystems, and the impact of human activity on the environment
  • application of advanced techniques and research tools used in laboratory research in the field of environmental protection
  • carrying out complex research tasks or expert opinions, selecting advanced methods and diverse sources of comparative data, including in English

Career prospects

A graduate of Environmental Protection will be prepared to work in:

  • environmental institutions
  • central and local government administration and non-governmental organizations
  • private consulting firms, expert firms
  • specialized laboratories, analytical, molecular diagnostics, forensic, etc.
  • science (universities, domestic and foreign research institutes), for example, in third-cycle studies

Specializations within the program

There is no specialization in the field of study, but a wide range of optional subjects allows students to focus on selected aspects of environmental protection.
